i know the exact thing you're talking about where driving thru hell puts you on such heightened alert that you can't come down once it's over, even when you're laying safe and sound in bed.

i had a similar experience in france where i had to drive a rental car. it was a standard and, as it turns out, i am basically incapable of driving a stick. i had to learn this the hard way while navigating the dense traffic and hills of marseilles. a drive that should have been done in 10 to 15 minutes took me well over an hour. over an hour filled with near-accidents as the car jolted forward unexpectedly, people honking and screaming, much swearing, and nary a light turning green that wasn't stalled thru 4 or 5 times before i could get the car to peel out. it was the most stressful, awful, driving experience i've ever had, and i couldn't shake it for at least 48 hours.

in the interest of defending myself, i should mention that once the car was turned over to a stick-driving-pro, even they had lots of problems with it, as this particular car was apparently very tricky, even if you knew what you were doing.

but hey, at least there wasn't any mud!
